SANAM partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to build the world-first semi-automated sugarcane-seedling factory — a national project designed to lift yield 220% per acre and scale toward 600 million seedlings a season.
Sugarcane is one of Egypt's most strategic crops — but traditional cultivation is dense and unorganized, hard to irrigate efficiently, and impossible to mechanize, which keeps yield per acre low and resource use high. Moving to seedling planting fixes that — but Egypt needs around 600 million seedlings a season, far beyond what manual production can deliver.
SANAM partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture to design and build the first automated sugarcane-seedling facility in the Middle East — and the first of its kind in the world. Semi-automated lines handle cutting, planting, and growing the seedlings at a scale no manual process could reach.
It started with a pilot factory of 2 million seedlings. From there the design scales to six large factories — each producing 100 million seedlings a season — across 50 acres and eight 1,000 m² production halls. The first large-scale factory is already 90% complete.
The pilot factory — a 2-million-seedling facility — was completed and inaugurated by the Minister of Agriculture in 2022. It proved the concept and set the stage for scaling the project nationwide.
